Blimey! Dh has had a 'green' brainwave that I must share

It's very simple but I am impressed with his thinking:

TO save water he has started emptying the water from the kettle (after it's cooled) into the water filter jug before he makes the next cuppa. Jug then goes in the frisge and we drink it!

(we're not going to be poisoned are we?)
But other than that... hurrah for dh!

oh i didnt realise you couldnt boil it twice > i dont empty my kettle before next cuppa

Beenleigh · 22/02/2008 11:28

but wouldn't it be better to just boil what you need? Not beoing negative, but I don't relly understnd this as presumably you wouldn't throw away the water left in the kettle anyway.......am I missing the point?

Freckle · 22/02/2008 11:29

It would probably be simpler to only put into the kettle the amount of water you want to heat in the first place . But, bless, men do like to think they can think, don't they?

Moomin · 22/02/2008 11:34

He doesn't overfill the kettle but there's always a little bit left over. He doesn't like boiling water twice because he says it makes the tea taste cacky (bless). It's probably only a cupful each time that goes into the filter jug but it's a good effort I thought.

hmmmmmm

callmeovercautious · 22/02/2008 11:38

A good idea, especially if you are boiling water for bottles or for LO to drink as it can't be twice boiled.

We try to only boil what we need but as you say there is always a drop left.

make your brew in the microwave. LBC radio yesterday sai that a microwave is far and away more ecologically sound - due to wattage of kettle as compared to a microwave.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 22/02/2008 11:46

but pretty dangerous custy
or can be

Tortington · 22/02/2008 11:47

why?

Tortington · 22/02/2008 11:50

oh in cas you are burned?

just leave to cool for a while - it can still be hot enough for a nice brew.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 22/02/2008 11:56

ah it was on snopes so not true.

www.snopes.com/science/microwave.asp

Tortington · 22/02/2008 12:33

water boiled in microwave can be a lot hotter than in kettle

if you THEN add coffee to it - it can fizz up kinda - and burn.

so let it cool for a bit until you can work out the right time

hippipotami · 23/02/2008 14:15

We only boil what we need in the first place. Because to boil more than you need means it takes longer to heat which therefore uses more electricity/gas...

So well done to your dh, but I suggest only boiling what you need in the first place

brimfull · 23/02/2008 14:17

why do you filter your water though

what's wrong with water from the tap?

Fillyjonk · 25/02/2008 06:29

we filter ours because we have lead piping

agree though that generally water filters are a big con. And NOT eco-friendly-all those plastic, unrecyclable filters.

Pixiefish · 25/02/2008 07:24

my uncle used to boil a full kettle and what was left would be put in a flask and used next time they wanted a cuppa

Cappuccino · 25/02/2008 12:54

makes the tea taste cacky?

using filtered water?

eh?

Triathlete · 28/02/2008 20:41

What on earth are you filtering for? We have the best drinking water in the world.
