Countryside vs city best for planet

After listening to a radio show today got me thinking about where is best to live for the environment, a city where everything is close and public transport is good or the countryside surrounded by trees and nature but maybe driving more living in more drafty places, any thoughts?

Hi I think you are making a very valid point. Having moved from london to edge of small town
a. my house is much less energy efficient compared to previous flat using 3x as much fuel
b. we managed on public transport for first 18 months but then I was unemployed and forced to take a job which requires me to use a car as part of my working day, so had to get a car.
Its kind of ironic isn't it that being in the countryside helps you to be more connected to nature but increases carbon foot print. I wonder if in the long term you try harder to be green if you have experienced nature though?

There's no hard and fast rule. You could be completely self-sufficient on a small holding in the country with a cargo bike for transport, or you could be driving a Range Rover to and from the avocado shop before returning to your eight bedroom mansion complete with hot tub.

Likewise you could be living in an inner city house share a short distance from an Underground station, or you could be driving hypercars through Knightsbridge.

Neither setting guarantees nor precludes a sustainable lifestyle.
