What to do with old uniform

Hello,

There is going to be a new uniform at my sons school from September. The parents have been aware of this for some time so most of the kids have been wearing very faded, very small tracksuits for a few terms!

My question is does anyone have any idea what could be done with all the old uniform. T shirts are cotton and the tracksuits and sweatshirts are 50% cotton and 50% polyester. It’s all navy blue and branded with the school logo.

Am open to any ideas about reuse or recycling! There will be a mountain of it and I hate the idea of it going straight to landfill.

Find somewhere that takes cloth for rags?

Keep it for wearing for garden work/comfies?

My daughter regularly wears her PE kit on the weekend!

What about those bags for school schemes. We have a clothes bin at our school. It gets weighed and our PTA gets paid for the clothes. They them reuse the clothes or recycle them somehow. But not landfill. It’s a charity who collect the clothes.

What about organisations which send uniform to schools which are underfunded?
Something like this? www.lightforce.org.uk/get-involved/clothes-donations/
I haven’t researched this particular organisation but worth looking into?

If the t-shirts are the aertex sort, they can easily be turned into excellent washing up/cleaning cloths!

There are organisations that will take it to the third world, if you can get the school to collect everything together.

DS's school has collected the old uniform/PE kit and it's sent to a school they have connections with in Africa.

Some charities collect “rags”which they can sell to b by reused into mattress filings etc. I think this is what a lot of the “cash for cloth” places do too.

I was about to suggest the same as BadgerFace. A school I worked at did this when they changed uniforms and they had pictures of the children who got the old uniforms sent to them. But it’s better if the school organises it so then they can collect lots of uniforms.
