Car Seat Recycling

Does anyone know how I can recycle a stage 2 car seat. We don't need it anymore but the thought of it in landfill makes me sad . I believe that after 4 years you should not use them as the plastic can start to disintergrate so I can't really give it away or freecycle it.

Cat's like to sleep in them?

Interesting about the plastic deterioration - surely that's an issue for the car seats that can be stage 1/2 and last a good number of years? I'm thinking of the Britax one we've got that is a birth - 18kgs. Dd is 4 and not 18kgs so is still using that seat.

i remember our old graco first car seat for DS1 (the kind you carry) had a use by date on it.

maybe contact the manufacturer and see what they say?

If its plastic, has it got any symbols on it anywhere to say if its recyclable? can't rememebr what that sign is like off the top of my head.

Call me cynical but I think the plastic degeneration thing is put out by the manufacturers to ensure we keep buying new ones. I would freecycle it if I were you and let the recipient know its age so they can decide for themselves. I would have no problem using a four year old car seat.

I don't know why, but I thought it was more like 10 years?

mummydoit · 20/08/2007 21:05

I heard it was about seven years. Definitely more than four. I've Freecycled my old ones but told the new owners how old they were and how much longer they could be used.

If the plastic is showing no signs of damage i would say it's ok.

isaidno · 20/08/2007 21:15

wikipedia says 6 years for most seats

MaureenMLove · 20/08/2007 21:16
