Anyone with an air heat pump?

Am thinking ahead here - hoping to convert and extend an old double fronted house with no mains gas and an old oil tank. I like the idea of a wood burner but think a different source of heating would be better.

We switched from an oil fired boiler to an air source heat pump this time last year. So far so good! It cost about £10k most of which we'll get back through the subsidy. We did have to upgrade our hot water cylinder as well which was extra.

From what we could tell, an ASHP works best with underfloor heating which we dont have, and it's best if it's done as part of a new build rather than retrofitted. However our house is 50 years old and it works well. It's much warmer than our old boiler was. We are still using our summer 4 tog duvet in our bedroom rather than our winter one although will probably switch them at the weekend.

Our electricity bill has gone up from £80 per month to about £140 averaged out over the year. But of course we not paying out for oil so we're probably saving about £500 per year on fuel. Plus we're being green about it!

We are in a 4 bedroom detached house with relatively good insulation.

Emma thanks loads for that. That's really helpful.
We'll
Be renovating a 150 yr old house so hopefully can factor
Something like this into the development. Under floor
Heating would be amazing Smile

It's a good idea if you can go and see one in action. My dh was given the details of a satisfied customer by our installers before we signed up and he went and visited their home. We've done the same thing for a couple of people who are interested including someone who was renovating an old house and putting in under floor heating. If you live anywhere near Cambridge you'd be welcome to come and look at ours!
