Sparking water

So I used to buy 2l bottles of sparking water from lidl for 45c a bottle. Switched to soda steam where I carbonate water from the tap using a refillable metal canister of CO2 which I can take back to Argos for a refill for a cost of €19:99 for the amount it takes to carbonate 60 litres of tap water.

So the gas alone costs me 66c for 2litres when I provide my own water and bottle - 50% dearer than lidl.

HOW does this make sense?

Financially it doesn't make sense, we have a sodastream for me its about avoiding waste.

Economy of scale. Lidl doesn't use a Soda Stream to carbonate their water.

Living ethically does not necasarily mean living cheaply. If anything it tends to be more expensive.

I just can't figure out how the combination of the plastic, and the transportation costs of 30 2l bottles of water is cheaper than cost of transportation and refill of of one canister of CO2.

I understand it must be economies of scale but am downhearted that this is the way of the world.

I like fizzy water too, but I only have it occasionally as a treat and recycle the bottles - apparently it's not good for you.

we switched to a soda stream this year. i don't know if it's much cheaper but it has hugely reduced our recycling of plastic bottles so worth it for that alone
