I think Phone Directories should be on request only - how many of you use them vs use the internet?

I must say I just look everything up on the internet now, never open any of the 4 phone books I get a year.

Given the cost (environmental and cash) of producing and transporting these, I really think they should consider making them on request only

OTOH they are useful if you run out of loo roll

Me too! I chuck them straight in the reccling box, such a waste.

I use mine but would order it instead if a flyer came round once a year says " would you like a new one"
Brillant idea.
Would it work for the yellow pages though? People pay to put their companies in them and would not pay as much if everyone did not get a new one.
perhaps just with residental listing to start with!

so true, petronellapinkpants.

MerlinsBeard · 29/05/2007 12:11

we don't get one but we do use a very old very outdated book from about 1998!
Its quicker than loading up the pc and DP hates 118 witha passion

Good idea. I would encourage people to opt out rather than making them opt in, though - I can't remember how many households have home internet access but I'd guess it was still under 50%.

We live in a block of flats, and the YP just gets dumped outside your front door -last one at beginning of year. The Philipino family downstairs left theirs outside until they moved out a month ago!! - their English was not the best and I suspect they had no idea what the YP was for. They just take up space in my flat, cos I don't like to put them in the bin they make the bags too heavy! I think Chestnutty's idea is a good one. Maybe you should write to them and suggest it.

HuwEdwards · 29/05/2007 12:18

good idea

babygrand · 29/05/2007 12:22

I agree - but it's not just phone books. Free papers and all sorts of other printed stuff goes straight into our recycling box. Complete waste of time/money/trees etc.

Kathyis6Incheshigh that is a very good point, although you can always use directory enquiries if you're not online. For the phone book to be any use to you anyway, you're going to have to have a phone.
