Which apples are more ethical?

(a) The new harvest ones that have been flown in from South America?

Or (b) the local ones that have presumably been in cold storage since last October?

I automatically assumed (a) would be worse, but as I was walking out with my bag of local apples, I started wondering how much energy had been used to store them.

I would go for the local ones.

I don't know how much energy is used to store them, perhaps not much because they usually keep if they are cool rather than cold. Don't know how it's done commercially though.
We've wrapped home-grown apples in paper and stored them for months in a garage, just checking them now and then.

The chap at my local farmer's market keeps his Kent apples at I think 7 degrees and they were still lovely last summer.

OK, thanks for your opinions. I'll eat the bodensee ones with a clear conscience

will soon be buying Italian peaches, which are grown only a stones throw away from here
