Environmentally safe rubber underlay to go under chemical-free carpet - where can I get it?

We've found 100% pure new wool carpet, untreated, to go in dd's bedroom, but 'Healthy Home' books I've got say that I should use rubber underlay, not glued but gripper-rodded. The shop says they'll buy in whatever I want - but I don't know where to get stuff that won't give off fumes or adversely affect dd's health. She hasn't got allergies, so dust mites, etc, aren't an issue - I know rubber can perish, but I'd rather have dust mites than chemicals IYSWIM.

this stuff?

I'm not sure there is such a thing as environmentally safe rubber. Ours is from Carpetright and made from recycled car tyres but I have no idea about chemical treatments to it. Maybe you would be better with a hardwood floor and a large 100% wool rug?

Thanks very much for that link, Tissy, will look into it. Floor plus rug would be great, Furball, but dh won't have it

Hi Fauve! Where did you find your carpet? We're fitting out a new room for DS as well and want exactly the same. If I see you I'll try to remember to ask!! (We also thought abt wood floor but think it will be noisy above us.)

Hi Babydriver Dh found the carpet in Bentalls in Kingston. I hope it really is chemical free, etc. The salesman there is waiting for me to get back to him on the underlay, so I'll look into the link here and other leads to see if I can establish which is best. They can't quite believe I really want rubber underlay, but I do. Apparently it's not so great in terms of allergies because it perishes and thus makes dust, but that's not a problem for dd (AFAIK). You can always borrow my books on perfectionist lentil-weaving environmentalism if you like...all very daunting, but worth vaguely aspiring towards...
