Ethical fabrics - BBC4 "Machines" India Textiles

1000piecepuzzle · 29/01/2018 20:59

Watched "Machines" looking behind the scenes at an Indian textiles mill and was speechless - the working conditions, the pay, the pollution, the children.

Can anyone recommend clothing made in the UK/EU from textiles also manufactured in the UK/EU?

Izzy lane - woollens. Asked for a pair of the socks for Christmas and they are beautiful.

Croft Mill fabric - British pieces [[

What about fabric made anywhere in the EU?

annandale · 29/01/2018 21:11

Ooh! Was looking for Russell & Robe and found this website Make it British

specialsubject · 30/01/2018 18:39

That site seems to be all ' pieces'. Is there anywhere similar i can buy clothes? Socks, knickers, t shirts , trousers with pockets, fleeces, thermal tops?

Don't need smart stuff, have plenty.

specialsubject · 30/01/2018 20:44

T shirts, that's it. Socks are one size in both her and him, so that's useless. Feet are not one size. Otherwise all pointless fashion crap. Thanks for trying.

1000piecepuzzle · 30/01/2018 23:32

Thanks - doesn't seem to be any "easy" obvious choice for basic clothes (& kids clothes), but will continue to search. There must be an option somewhere. I'd be just about willing to sew some PJs but can't weave my own fleece!

Some good links here too
[http://moralfibres.co.uk/ethical-clothing-brands-women/]

They are all ££ to £££. At least some do socks, but its a hard leap to change from 5 pants for a fiver at the supermarket to 5 pants for £50.

Thanks again - I'd put up with the revolting marketing if they made fit for purpose knickers. Sadly not , mandatory itchy lumpy ugly lace on every single design , stupid show through colours too. No choices.

Plain white high legs? Not offered.

BetterEatCheese · 28/02/2018 18:30

Nomad clothing is lovely and has some nice basic bits

British made, great quality.
People tree aren't made in the UK but are produced ethically.

thedevilinablackdress · 01/03/2018 10:05

Came on to say People Tree too. And there will ve other ethical non-UK/EU co.s out there.

Ellisisland · 19/04/2018 14:03

Rapanui is great. Quality organic cotton, good prices. Ethical practices and you can track entire chain from growing of the cotton. I'm very impressed by them.

TheClitterati · 24/04/2018 23:12

Rapanui is based in uk. - they employ disadvantaged youth. They also share their ethical processes and supply chain with other companies.

DuchyDuke · 24/04/2018 23:18

Ethical textiles are a big thing in India but mostly geared towards Indian clothes. If you want material you could buy a saree and then get a local tailor to sew you what you want.

duckling84 · 01/05/2018 18:08

British made I believe:

Hiut jeans
Barbour coats
Homebody pjs

Unfortunately none is organic cotton though.

Now if someone could recommend me some shoes I would be most grateful. I'm not fussy - just want them to be vegan (non leather), black, ballet pumps (suitable for smart work) and preferably made in the UK or at least ethical/fair trade produced. Simple enough request I thought.......

TheClitterati · 02/05/2018 09:31

@duckling have you looked at Toms & Natural Shoe Store?

Toms tends to be a bit casual but they do have some smart work shoes if you look.

Free People - lots of crazy designs but a few more basic styles too

Vegan & UK made but not ballerina

non leather Fit Flop ballerinas

I think your spec is a bit Holy Grail Grin

TheClitterati · 02/05/2018 09:33

Vegan black slip-ons - made in Spain though

duckling84 · 02/05/2018 18:58

Thank you they are great links!
I have fallen in love with toms jutti and think they would be perfect but they are either non-vegan or non-black and most definitely not in a size 6!

That's the main problem I've found I've found when looking for ethical, organic clothing - they are usually far to casual and don't seem to think you can want ethical and work in a place where the dress code is "office wear". Oh and definitely not work in smart work place AND be on just above minimum wage AND want ethical! I am clearly demanding far too much Grin

TheClitterati · 03/05/2018 10:11

I think a lot of cheaper shoes are probably "vegan" (or at least non-leather) but just aren't marketed as such.

Perhaps try looking in non hip cheaper high street shoes chains or supermarkets - that is where you will find your non leather ballerina pumps. Of course the "ethical" bit will probably be missing!
