Wind farms! Love em or hate em?

I personally feel they are an excellent way of generating energy without impacting the environment.

I am fed up with people complaining they damage the view or reduce house prices. I would be happy to live in the shadow of a turbine! People wont be around in years to come to enjoy the view if we dont so something about the environment now!

And I think a turbine is quite an attractive abstract thing and it makes a lovely soothing noise.

I agree with you LFMS,

We actually went out of our way to visit one once, you couldn't hear ANY noise until you were in the same field (about 50 yds away) and then it was a low soothing hum. Living in a city I'm amazed people complain about that level of noise!

I LOVE them, it makes me feel all excited when I see them as I go past in the car (yes I know the irony of this). It's like seeing kites in the sky.

I want one too but we are listed and the council told us to sod off!

Whizzz · 10/04/2007 20:06

I think they are great & look so elegant - I wouldn't object to one near us

JackieNo · 10/04/2007 20:06

Yup - I love them too. Haven't ever got close to one though.

Carmenere · 10/04/2007 20:06

I adore them, there is one near the village where my parents live and I love them, even up close. When you drive to Tarife in spain there are tons of them, very dramatic and lovely.

I think they're okay

Gobbledigook · 10/04/2007 20:08

Don't bother me. But I don't live near one. I don't think they spoil the landscape where I've seen them though.

We went to Sweden a few years ago and in the approach to Gothenburg there were lots of little islands with wind turbines and I thought that was cool.

However last year we went to Norfolk in July and on a couple of beaches there were turbines visible a short distance out to sea and that did seem intrusive - more so than when they are sited on hills etc. I love them inland but off the beach seems wrong somehow

Gingermonkey · 10/04/2007 20:14

There's a wind farm near the cattery that my cat goes 'on holiday' to, I get so giddy when I see it! I think they are beautiful and if I could stare at the turbines all day I would . I wish there was one nearer to me, but I have a postage stamp for a garden and there's no way it would fit . Much more beautiful than the nasty pylons that ruin the countryside.

I love them

Driving down to Cornwall last year we rounded a bend in the road and suddenly there was a huge wind farm there. Absolutely stunning, dramatic and amazing that we can harness the wind in this way.

Gingermonkey · 10/04/2007 20:17

Are the ones in Norfolk near Suffolk Jan? Where in Norfolk was it? I want to go when I go and see my Mum and Dad!!!! And turbines are nicer than Sizewell A, B, C, D, E, F...whatever letter they are up to now!

Yes, GM - can't remember precisely which beach but it was def S Norfolk, Sea Palling maybe?

fio, I know what you mean, they are silent and distant but it just feels like the horizon should be empty at the sea.

I'm going to phone my dad tomorrow and ask him, so I can take the monkeys out there! (am I sad????)

JanH · 10/04/2007 20:31

Hang on, DH says it's not Sea Palling but he has to go and look in the road atlas to find out which one it was!

JanH · 10/04/2007 20:36

Try Winterton, GM

Rumpel · 10/04/2007 20:36

I like them too - can't believe all the whingers - they really do my head in. My parents are just about to have them erected on some of their land. The road builders have to be quick though as if they don't get the road finished in the next couple of weeks they'll need to wait until Autumn as it disturbs the grouse in mating season.

Can't believe that people I know are so against them being anywhere near their village as 'it will ruin their view and countryside' when they face onto a nuclear power plant!! How does that make sense?

Gingermonkey · 10/04/2007 20:38

oh, winterton - yes, I remember now. I'm off with the kids (and poor DH, who is not as excited as me!). Thank you Jan xxx

JanH · 10/04/2007 20:42

Turbines at Winterton

JanH · 10/04/2007 20:43

Have fun, GM

Gingermonkey · 10/04/2007 20:48

I'm getting giddy now - I want to go and visit my mum and dad right now and play on the beach watching the turbines . Thank you Jan, you've made my night (in fact my whole week!!!!)

LowFatMilkshake · 10/04/2007 20:50

The ones in the sea are outside Grt Yarmouth - looks like Teletubby Land at sea!
