Got your own solar power? Where to start?

We are extending our house this year and I would like to find out about installing a solar power system. We don't have lots of money... Can anyone advise on where to start looking? I'm totally stupid when it comes to science so I need idiot-proof information. Thanks.

funny enough, dh tonight is at a open-door session to talk to people who run a training course for DIY solar hot water, CAT me and I can give more details.

I didnt' have solar power at home but did have solar powered electric fencing, very good

BBC2 normally (can't remember which night) - it also has it's own chat room (which is very good in a lentil weaving/solar/biofuel/organic everything type way.......not like MN at all
