green cars

We'll have to buy a car, new or second hand, in about 6 months time so we're looking into green alternatives to petrol. But we have no idea what's on the market, only that the choice is pretty limited. Could anyone advise? We could even consider hybrid systems.

Toyota 'prius' looks good and they have been around quite a while now. I want one but need to save up. They are mid size so quite roomy (seats fold down) and use one tank per 900/1,000km. There are also lots of very economical small (petrol)cars, depends what you want I guess.

Thanks Uki. The Toyota is on hubby's list actually. Will google to get a picture of it as I don't even know what it looks like.

You can compare cars based on their CO2 emissions here

Just wondering - does anyone know anywhere that I can access info about the amount of pollution created in the manufacture of hybrid cars vs petrol/diesal. I know that they tend to emit less in the running but I am not clear about whether they are actually more polluting to make in the first place? Does anyone know?

Sorry to hijack your thread Pizpiz!

That eco-place in Somerset (Eden Project) is doing a multi-day show on eco-green cars right now. There was a motoring journalist (Top Gear presenter) on Radio 5 dismissing this green show, saying he'd never heard of the Tessla, for instance (pillock).

WE've got a giant range rover and we're trying to combat its gas guzzling ways by part filling with vegetable/rapeseed oil. It's also a bit more economical than just using diesal all the time.

Dh uses VegetableOilDiesel for information.

Check out the VW Polo coming out called Bluemotion. It's being launched at The Sexy Green Car Show at The Eden Project - March 30th to April 15th (I think).
