how environmentally friendly are "lush" products?

cos they are full of lovely essential oils and stuff but also that sodium lauryl sulphate and other chemical things that are apparently bad...??

i use the bath bubble slice as an air freshner at work.

think they are reasonably eco-friendly. SLS is made from cocnuts, after all.

I emailed them about SLS, and they said, it wasn't harmful and the propaganda against it was a marketing ploy by the pyramid selling cosmetic companies

The Cynthia Sylvia Stout shampoo for brunettes is marvellous

SLS is crap if you have eczema. Had long conversation in neals yardlast xmas:

me: I need something without SLS for my severely allergic brother.
shop assistant: oh, we don't have anything with SLS in it, its all natural stuff.
me: (looking through ingrediants) no, you do, look. (looking through more ingredients) and here, and here
her: oh, no, thats ok, thats natural SLS.

was unaware that cosmetic companies sold pyramids. its nice to learn new things.

hate the stuff - no idea whether environmentally friendly, but smells very strongly. Strong smells like that often give me migraines - even just walking past the shop does it.

I've got a book called Chemical Maze: Shopping Companion by Bill Statham ... it lists food and cosmetics additives and describes their impact - SLS is listed as follows:

Sodium laureth sulphate (may contain carcinogens 1, 4-dioxane and ethylene oxide)

  • FUNCTION: Surfactant/detergent
  • POTENTIAL EFFECTS: mild eye & skin irritation; can cause the formation of nitrosamines (carcinogenic compounds); toxic to aquatic organisms.

Obviously sounds quite scary, but not sure to what extent these possible effects should be heeded. SLSs are found in just about every non-organic cosmetic out there - they're even in toothpaste!!

If you want truly want eco-friendly skincare products I think the only alternative is to buy certified organic. I'm trying Green People products (but pricey!). Plus, not sure if I want to give up my Colgate toothpaste for non-fluoridated one (especially cos their flavoured with strange things like mandarin!).
