Electric Car In London? Please help a clueless potential buyer

I'm convinced this is now the way forward given I can no longer commute by bicycle due to a slightly nasty RTA that left me with a badly fractured leg

But, I have no rule clue about the practicalities and have a few questions if I may?

  1. We only have on street parking. How will I charge it given I can't leave a cable across the public pavement?
  1. How many miles does a car like, say, the G-Wiz do per charge? My round trip commute is probably around 12 miles. Will I need to charge it every day? Will it even do that round trip?

3.Can I park for free in Westminster/Central London? Or is it just discounted?

  1. Do you pay to charge it in places like Sainsburys, where I've seen charging docks in parking bays?
  1. How long does it hold it's charge?

Erm, that's it.

TIA.

Oh, and also, am I mad? And would you say buying second hand makes sense?
