Moths Eating My Parents' House

I saw my dear 85 yr old father this week who was proudly wearing a new birthday Uniqlo cashmere jersey - bought about a month ago - but full of moth bites. I asked my stepmother ( very nice, about 15 yrs younger, gendered I know but honestly my dad had not even noticed the holes) who said she had bought some strips from Ocado and thought they would 'do the trick.' I don't think she realised the damage the moths will do. I suspect they are everywhere, carpets etc, the house is old and dusty. I admit to a lot of neurosis about moths but what can I do? The whole house needs pest control but I don't think they would do it. - they'd find it difficult to leave the house etc and would think it a waste of money. Any less expensive effective suggestions?

Don't make your neurosis about moths their problem.

Your stepmother is aware and is dealing with it.

Don't make the insulting assumption that she is incapable and that they need your help - they're not asking for it.

I have posted this before on the dreaded moth question, the answer is Indorex flea spray.

I had tried numerous specific moth treatments and nothing worked.

Indorex cured the problem with one application. Now about four years on I have never seen another moth.

You need to do spray all around the edges of every carpet and if furniture is moveable under furniture too.

Ventilate the room thoroughly as per instructions on the spray.
One big spray tin covered my 3 bed bungalow.

B&Q do mothballs. It would be worth placing them in all the wardrobes and drawers. They smell a bit for a day or so then the smell goes. I buy them because we buy second hand clothes and DS has started collecting men's kilts.

That’s niche! Does he wear them?

We have found the moth stuff from Lakeland very effective, we had them in a wool carpet under our sofa, treated it with this about 5 years ago and no return. I use paper repellant strips in our wardrobe and never had any problems there but they wouldn’t deal with an infestation.

Yes, I agree. Indorex flea spray seems more effective than the other moth products for some reason.

If your parent’s carpets are real wool, you will need to make sure all the edges are sprayed.

@maudelovesharold for special occasions. He's half Scottish.

We just moved into an infested house. So far - replaced what we can with synthetic carpets.
Moth spray all the way round the edges including under the skirting boards when the old carpets were up.
Put wool into IKEA plastic storage bags. (Less useful if you wear constantly like me). Pheromone traps. Mothballs in pockets.

We also moved into an infested house this year. They are largely gone now, though I do see the odd one or two. We've been dealing with them by regular vacuuming (including skirting boards and underneath furniture), parasitic wasps and pheremone traps. We also have mothballs in wardrobes and drawers as a preventative but I haven't seen any on there yet.
