Transferring my Dad's care package from England to Wales. Parents not coping!

Hello Mumsnetters. My Dad has had a storke, he's all with it mentally, still completely himself but has significant physical impairment, he's bed/chair bound, and has carers 4x a day. At the moment he is still in the 6 weeks provided by the hospital following discharge, and is being assessed this week by the council to look at his ongoing needs.

It's very hopeful with a lot of work he will be able to get himself in and out of bed and to toilets etc, there is hope for the future.

However, right now my Mum is really not coping at all, she finds the whole thing completely distressing and exhausting, she can't cope with my Dad not coping, he's the rock she's the one that is looked after usually, they don't work this way round. She's almost making things worse.

I think Dad should move in with me and my husband, husband is absolutely fine with this. However they are in England and we are in Wales. We can't provide all the care he needs so he would still need his care package.

Anyone have any experience of how that would work, how would his care needs be transferred from England to Wales? He would only be with us temporarily until he can move about and get to bathrooms on his own again, I'd say up to 6 months max, so his address will still be England.

Thanks for any advice!

I work for a post stroke team, and certainly in my experience access is all about where your GP is. It’s easy to transfer GPs but I would definitely start calling the social worker who is overseeing the reenablement care package your Dad is currently receiving, and get their views on how to make this work.

Id also call the Stroke Association and Age UK helplines as both may have useful insights.

Thank you @PermanentTemporary . I forgot about GPs! I was thinking it was to do with the Council. Thanks very much for replying and for your advice.

personal care is not free in wales i dont think.
youd need to factor those costs in too.
