Deferred payment scheme for care homes question

Hello

I haven’t been on this board before but I’d like to ask a question, please.

My siblings & I think that Dad will need to go into a care home at some point in the next year. (Mum died a few years ago so he is the only one in his house).

I think he’s just over the self-funding threshold.

We’re spread over the country and one of the questions we’re currently looking at is where would be the best area. What I specifically want to know is, if we chose a home near to one of us instead of where he’s currently living, would we still have the option of a deferred payment scheme to tide us / him over until we were able to sell his house?

I haven’t been able to find a clear answer to this so far. Thank you.

Each area is different, but where we live, we were not eligible because the price of my mum’s property did not provide her 3 year’s worth of care and that was the minimum for the deferred payment scheme in our area.

we had to wait to move her when her property sold.

He would be resident in the authority where his property is and he lives when admitted to a care home even if the care home is in a different local authority area.

its quite common that families choose a home nearer them if appropriate rather than in the area where the parent lives.

ask your LA for their deferred payment policy and this will give you all the information you need.

Thanks both.

The care home itself might accept a deferred payment until the house is sold, doesn’t have to be through the LA. They might put a charge on it.
