Any experience of a shoulder replacement in an 85 yr old ?

My parent, generally still active and driving, needs a shoulder replacement. My question is, does anyone have experience of this in an elderly widowed parent ? I do not live locally but can stay as required.Thanks

Not in an 85-year-old, my dad was about 71 when he had it done – he was in significant pain afterwards for a few days whilst he was still in hospital. When he came home, he did need a lot of looking after for a few weeks but has had a great result overall . He’s 80 now.

The recovery process is long 3-6mths but then upto a year to regain strength etc. Also having to wear a sling for about 6 weeks if I remember correctly.

Is it their dominant arm? How mobile and active are they usually?

I think that’s quite major surgery to go through at 85. Also if they’re still driving they will have a period unable to drive during recovery, and I’d imagine it would be very hard to get back to driving safely at that age?

Anaesthetist PoV - If they haven’t already discussed this it may be worth asking if they run a high risk anaesthetic clinic they could go to pre-op. This may help with planning/thinking about some of the stuff they may need to consider for post-op.
