I keep thinking what little help these are.
I suppose they allow discussion with health professionals.
But only when capacity is deemed impaired and that is often long after such discussions would have been helpful.
And then what ? Capacity may be lacking and officially agreed as so .... but to what end? Emotion , fear, strength of will , can still exist. And what are we talking about then?
Forcing people to do things they don't want to do and strongly resist?

I agree they’re nothing like a complete answer. I think the only thing worse than having one is not having one.

I think it’s often in someone’s best interests to have what they want. Not easy if that will probably mean a shorter life/messy death and you feel as though you’ve contributed to that decision though.

@PermanentTemporary wise words.

Having LPA is better than not and I intend to have one.

But what people choose can be hard for their loved ones to watch @allamberedover and I did force the issue and it saved the life but resistance is reducing the quality of life, which is also hard to watch.

It seems to me it’s pretty useless, except in getting information from the GP who might otherwise refuse to discuss it.

Oh, and if family members disagree on the way forward, the one with PoA wins.

PoA would have helped enormously with a massive issue with family disagreements. Not much else though. But that alone would have been enough.

Thank you all for responses.
Especially I think it’s often in someone’s best interests to have what they want. Not easy if that will probably mean a shorter life/messy death and you feel as though you’ve contributed to that decision though.
I shall try and remember them.
