Can a broken knee heal extremely fast, elderly DF won’t sit down!

DF is 80 this year and broke his knee to some extent when out walking and fell.
I Haven’t seen him so can’t judge the damage but from what my mum tells me it swelled up badly at first and has now gone down, the doctor told him not to drive but he won’t listen. He’s been driving daily and walking around doing jobs non stop telling everyone it’s better but I don’t think it is; I think he’s just being extremely stubborn and he doesn’t want to sit still!
Anyone known of an elderly person to recover amazingly after a fractured knee!?

Just to add he’s very able still, but I’m not sure he’s this able!

It does seem unlikely that he's so well. But lovely of course.

Did he have an X ray when he broke it?

If it’s not fractured, but say the patella was slightly dislocated and then popped back into place, that would account for it feeling fine really quickly and being able to walk with no pain within a few days.

He fractured it and was told to rest and not drive for weeks. He’s not listened at all and I’m concerned it’s going to get worse.

Doubt his insurance will cover him if he's been advised medically not to drive and chooses to ignore it

My Dad has his knee replaced (I know it’s not the same thing), but he was told by his doctor to exercise after 3 days and do his physio

“He’s been driving daily ”

And if a doctor has told him not to, he is effectively driving without insurance. Time to take away the car keys, OP. As far as recovery is concerned, he should be fine - people his age have knee replacements. I hope he’s putting ice on it to keep the swelling down.

So an Xray showed a fractured kneecap? It sounds a bit odd that he was just told to rest. I was in a full leg plaster for a month after a very clean patellar fracture.
