Elderly parents

Good area of Manchester for 60+ to live

My mother is moving to Manchester. She doesn’t drive so would need somewhere close to a tram stop or other good public transport. Other than Prestwich / Whitefield what areas are nice (and affordable) for someone aged 60+ to live?

What's her budget? I'm not sure 60 is elderly though.

Affordable is context specific. Give us a rough budget.

What I think is affordable for my oldiemight not be what you think is affordable....or equally your Ma might be downsizing from a desirable cheshire village so have a huge budget relatively...

I was going to suggest Prestwich! Is there something you don’t like about it? What’s her budget?

doodleygirl · 16/01/2025 21:51

60, that’s not old, what does your mum want?

Hann376 · 17/01/2025 10:14

Thanks everyone! I think budget is around £400k :) yeah she is not too elderly tbf but would want to live somewhere not just filled with young people haha. ! Prestwich / whitefield are options but want to know of any other potential areas and maybe in south manchester :)

Depends what she wants.

Areas to the south like Romiley or Marple are nice and have train connections.

Have reasonable communities but they wouldn't be as well connected overall and so naturally have less of a young person vibe.

They aren't cheap so it depends what you expect 400k to buy. There are things within that price range but not four bed bungalows.

Stockport.

Sale, Timperley, Altrincham all lovely places to live and very convenient with the tram.

Im biased because I live on the Whitefield border! She could get a really nice house in Radcliffe a stones throw away from the tram stop - the centre is being rebuilt and there will be great central facilities completed this year - library, community centre, swimming pool etc.

And not affordable...

£400,000 will get a place suitable for a single 60 year old in Sale or Timperley.
