Selling parents car?

My elderly father has had to stop driving for health reasons. Unfortunately we have had to make this decision for him as he has dementia and is currently unwell in hospital. We want to sell the car so he can use the money for taxis etc when he is discharged. The car has been sitting unused for a long time and will lose more value if we don’t sort it out now.

has anyone else had this situation and can you tell me how we complete the transfer of ownership etc. DF does not currently have capacity to sign ( and is frail with Parkinson’s so can’t physically sign either). My DS and I have power of attorney so can we sign the V5C form on his behalf?

I have tried to call the DVLA to ask but the call waiting times were really long!

If you have LPOA for finances then yes, crack on.

You can do the transfer online too, no need for any signature. I just sold a vehicle privately & it was really quick & simple

I sold my mum's car recently and because I had the V5 the garage just accepted that I had permission to sell it. I didn't need to transfer ownership to myself first.

We were lucky to find a garage that sold adapted cars so I didn't have to go to the trouble of having the wheelchair hoist removed from it before.

We had to sell FiL’s (dementia). With P of A it was fine. The only problem was (we sold it privately) the chap who wanted it paid a £50 deposit, which dh was daft enough to give to FiL - who then hid it, and subsequently went mad when he couldn’t find it! That was a few hours of our lives gone, frantically searching for the wretched £50. IIRC he’d put it in a pyjama pocket and then hidden the PJ top under the mattress!
