DM (82) Has been given these for one week only .
First time only I did not manage to get to the appointment with her .

Why only one week ?

Minor improvements

No extra urine out put.

Fasting bloods tomorrow..(why ?)

Chest X ray results due as well .

First time I could not go to doctors with her ...as she booked it herself...

What does it all mean ??
Thank you .**

Has your mum told you why she went to the doctors, what symptome she has been having

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 17/05/2022 18:07

My mum has been taking this for years for high blood pressure. Does your mum have another appointment next week where the meds will be reviewed? A quick google shows that it can be taken short or long term but I couldn't see why. Sorry, I'm no help. It is so frustrating when you miss what the doctor has said.

headstone · 17/05/2022 18:17

I’m not a doctor, my guess though maybe your mum has fluid retention. Furosemide is not good for the kidneys so not always recommended long term. It usually increases urine out put. Fasting bloods maybe to check for diabetes.

Branleuse · 17/05/2022 18:20

Its a diuretic, so doctor wants to reduce some fluid somewhere

FlowerArranger · 17/05/2022 18:24

If furosemide is given short term, it'll be for oedema (fluid retention). It's important that she takes it as prescribed. Does she have a follow up appointment?

FlowerArranger · 17/05/2022 18:26

And the fasting blood tests are probably to check for diabetes and blood lipids.

bizzey · 17/05/2022 18:35

Thank you all so much for responding.

Can't replied individualy...

But these are the bullet points I missed out .(aka....the dreaded drip feed !!)

DM has not been good for about a year.

Lots if issues including
Nueropathy, (pre gabalin)
Disc problems (injections into spine, pain patch and naproxen)

Pre diabetes..watch diet...

And on going heart/high blood pressure being monitored.

Legs were very bigger ,(had been to GP before) and sore.

I was confused why it was only a 7 day script ?

My bullet point s is even more confusing !
Sorry .

Oh and urine is going to be tested as well .

The pre-gabalin, naproxen are new tablets of about 8 months ish .

Guessing because the diagnosis is unknown and she is having some tests so review with the test results?

MysterOfwomanY · 17/05/2022 21:23

Checking for diabetes, maybe heart failure too. Very tricky when we get old, everything stops working as well and the meds for one thing make something else worse - aargh

Musicaltheatremum · 17/05/2022 22:38

I sometimes try frusemide for a week then review to see if it is helping and stop if it isn't. No point on keeping people on medication they don't need

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/05/2022 07:49

My memory from uni days is that blood testing for diabetes involves fasting. Things may have changed.

Wandamakesporridge · 20/05/2022 17:41

My DM has been given furosemide for water retention (swollen legs), also prescribed just for a week, then it will be reviewed. I guess they want to see if it’s worked first?

bizzey · 21/05/2022 11:41

Thank you all very much for replying.
Things escalated after the bloods appointment!
We had to wait around to see a GP, who sent us to hospital to check for DVT .

That was clear
But they have taken her off the frusomide. She was not passing urine as normal while on them anyhow .

They have changed one of her blood pressure tablets instead .
So here's hoping that will solve the riddle of her swollen legs !

Still early days,,,,and the burning pain is still there.

Got to ring the GP on Monday to discuss it.

Just thought I would update this thread in case anyone came across it via search.

The change in the blood pressure tablets has worked !

Took about a week to notice any significant changes ....

But she feels like she has lost weight all over .

She is not as bloated ?

Hope this helps others.
