Elderly parents

90 year old mother "feeling giddy"

My Mum says that a feeling of giddiness and everything moving around her can come over her quite suddenly, even if she is sitting in her chair not doing anything.

Her mother, my grandmother, used to say the same thing (to which my Mum would roll her eyes and dismiss it as stuff and nonsense - but that's another story!). Is this the sort of thing that often results in falls in elderly parents? Is there any treatment that you know of that can help and decrease the likelihood of falling?

Does she have low blood pressure?

Might be worth checking if her ears are in need of syringing, as that can affect balance.

Tell the GP, could be any number of things - blood pressure, inner ear problems, but yes, I would have thought this would greatly increase the risk of a fall and should be checked.

She's actually in hospital at the moment. She's been treated for a UTI and cellulitis and had countless scans and tests (they have been very thorough, I must admit) but it is nigh on impossible for me to speak to a Dr in charge of her care.

How is low blood pressure usually treated?

Hope she is ok. Low blood pressure can be treated with tablets', compression socks, diet and inreased fluids. If thats what is causing her dizzy spells.
