How does it work? Assessed by just one care home or more? Elderly mum ready to come out of hospital

Hi all

Mum's unexpectedly coming out of hospital faster than we thought - and doesn't want to go home.

We've found two care homes we like, each with a space.

Should we ask both to assess her? Or just the one we like best?

I gather they can turn us down at assessment and we know we need to move fast before these spaces go!

Thanks

If you have your mind set on one then ask them to assess first.

I had my father assessed by two, even though I had a preference, I just thought it can’t be predicted if a space is lost.

I would say get assessed by both, the one you like may not take him after the assessment. It obviously depends on the carehome but a lot of them prefer to take a mixture of low and high demand residents and after the assessment they may decide your father doesn't fit in to the category that they want to offer the space to. Also a word of warning, a successful assessment may not mean that your dad can stay there permanently. My grandma was recently assessed as capable as living in an assisted living facility but we were asked to find somewhere else for her after only 3 days as after seeing her needs on a 24 hour basis they decided they weren't equipped to deal with her needs. So its always good to have a plan B.

This is really helpful - they've both given us a few days to decide and it is entirely possible that DP might get turned down by one (or both).

Thank you - this is what we will do.
