house clearance company needed - nr Eastbourne

A couple of queries

I need to get in a house clearance company to clear my aunt's flat once we have dealt with bequests. Can any one recommend a reliable company in the Eastbourne area (flat is in Hailsham)?

I have never had to deal with a house clearance company before - any tips? What queries should I be asking when getting quotes? What should I expect from them?

My great aunt lived in that area, and the solicitors recommended a house clearance service which we used. I think it was a charity one, so you didn't pay, they just took everything.

Our local hospice offers this- local charities may be better.

Google "charity house clearers" in our area St Francis Hospice and the Air Ambulance do it. we chose the Hospice and they were great. We paid £850 which was much less than commercial quotes.

Thanks pansy - wow, that's still a lot of money...do you mind me asking how big the property was? My Aunt has a 1 bed retirement flat - just looking for size comparison

She had a large 3 bed with masses of old furniture which was heavy. We are in London, so everything costs more. They offered two services, the free one where they take just what they can sell. The pay -for service was by estimate, so I would imagine they would be a lot cheaper for 1 bed flat. Is her retirement flat on a complex? You might find that the owners have firms they use.

It's in a managed group of flats, but the management company don't seem very helpful. The site manger is a lot more user friendly though. I'll giver her a call tomorrow - thanks for the suggestion!

One thing I hadn't stated is that I am in Norwich and my brother in Brigg; we're finding it somewhat challenging trying to organise this all from afar

We used Martlett's hospice based in Peacehaven, so nearer to Brighton than Eastbourne. It was a large 4 bed an drew they charged about £600 I think. We used Gorringes the auctioneers for selling some antiques.
