Ideas for short stories

My DF is in a nursing home & his dementia is such that it's hard to have much of a conversation with him, so I have been reading to him which he enjoys. Does anyone have any suggestions of suitable books of short stories? Something fairly classical & simple without being fairy tales? I don't think there's any point in reading chapters of a book as he won't remember from one day to the next. Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

Damon Runyon or Saki, short story classics
What about British Library imprints of classic crime shorts - very genteel

all of the above, plus Chekhov and E M Forster's both do good short stories.
