dad now on acute ward for 4 weeks and counting...private rehab hospitals in bournemouth?

Thanks for support on my thread last week.

I've checked out the legal position and it seems that the community hospitals in Dorset can indeed reject dad even though 7 days after his hip op. they had accepted him..... to all those people who said this Government was dismantling the NHS - I'm sorry I doubted you.

A final "rejection" seems likely and after four weeks on his back he has lost his sense of balance(tries to lean back when standing) and his muscles are weakened. We are keeping up the pressure as a family and the physios on the ward are spending as much time with him as they can but they are fighting the system.

We could really do with finding a rehab place with shared wards like an NHS hospital but a serious commitment to "mobilising" him. He and mum can pay if it's the right place.

Any ideas? Back to GP? We found a Blandford hospital on the web that sounds suitable but we don't know how you get admitted...

we don't even know if he can go home at the moment, the hospital stay has set him back so much :(

I've had a quick look and BMI seem to offer inpatient rehab, this link is to the page on it. If you click 'locate our hospitals' it shows a list of the ones that offer rehab. Maybe have a look and see if any are near you?

I don't know if they would accept him, but it's worth a try!

Can the hospital discharge people not help. They must know where patients go.

Yes. They can. That is what we've come to.

They just pass it to social services who have, of course, no obligation to make him better.

I actually got a specialist lawyer over to the house because I couldn't believe it was true.... but he confirmed that Poole hospital has no right to demand that any particular rehab facility takes dad on. It's a regulated but private contract between them...

I am going through the process with my mum at the moment. She broke her hip 5 weeks ago and spent 3 weeks on an acute ward in a hospital which was 50 miles away from where she and my dad live. She is 90 and has Alzheimer's but was still very mobile before the fall.

She was rejected by the first rehab place but was lucky enough subsequently to get a bed in Lewes Intermediare Care Centre two weeks ago. They have been fab and she has had lots of physio/trips to their gym but, unfortunately, due to her dementia she has now plateaued and they want her to be discharged.

Unfortunately we have had to organise a nursing home for her as she isn't in a fit state to return home (she has become doubly incontinent and still can't really walk). Dad is devastated, but at least on the plus side she will be only 1/4 of a mile away from home.

I really hope your dad's situation turns out better than my mum's

I think you should talk to your fathers GP about what to do next. My suggestion would be to consider a nursing home stay for him if he's not safe to come home and pay for intensive physio whilst he's there. We decided to put my mother in a nursing home (with her full agreement) for 4 weeks following hospital discharge when she broke her leg aged 80 ish. It just wasn't "safe" for her to come home. As it was very close to their home it worked very well for her and dad.
