Having suffered a very bad gastric infection, my 88 year old mum who has very bad arthritis all over her body, is being released from hospital today. Being so poorly has frightened her & made her realise she should not be living alone in her very unsuitable home (lots of interior steps to toilet/bathroom) & that she wants 24hr care in a home. Me & dsis both work full time but pop in twice per day to help out, do shopping, cleaning etc. we are very stressed & tired & worried for her safety when we are not there. Mentally she is still very astute and capable.
Anyway the LA have told us she must come home and have 2 visits per day by social services who will watch her doing various activities & offer her ways to help herself. I have argued that she has been struggling for years, but hides it well as she hates strangers getting involved with her care, but now this sort of help is of no use but they are insisting she has to come home. Does anyone know where I take it from here? Apparently there are no 'short cuts' to getting into a care home, however disabled you are.

I'm afraid that unless you can pay for it yourself, there is no easy way to get care. If she is in a council house, then it may be reasonably easy for her to get into sheltered accommodation, or at least a much more suitable flat.
