Stannah Stairlifts?

Has anyone had one of these (or similar) fitted in their parents' home? My mum is wheelchair-bound and my dad has so far been carrying her up and down the stairs but of course he's an old man himself now and this can't continue.

Any recommendations or pitfalls? If I get the ball rolling how long would it take to get done? Costs?

My Mum has a Stannah stair lift. She got quotes from 3 different companies, and Stannah was the cheapest. They had it in within about 3 weeks, I think. Cost will depend on the size of the house and how many stairs - Mums was just over £4,000. She loves it!

My mum and aunt both had Stannahs. Seemed v reliable. There's a service charge on top of the original price, so someone comes out within 24 hrs if it goes wrong and for annual maintenance. I think you can get reconditioned ones, too.

Sorry I'm not up to date on prices, but would definitely recommend the brand.

Thank you ladies, now that I've an idea of a figure I can sit my dad down and explain what needs to be done. He confessed to me last night that he's spent 5 months carrying her up and down the stairs. :( If he falls...

My uncle bought one for my grandma second hand, £250. He fitted it himself and then got it serviced by a stairlift engineer. You don't mention that cost is an issue, but there is a second hand market out there.

My grandma is thrilled with hers, and particularly that it didn't cost the £5K she was expecting.

My mother had one, she found it most helpful. I would imagine the cost would depend to some extent on what the stairs are like (mum's was a straight flight, no corner) - but I'm sure if you ring or email they'll be able to talk you through it.

It might just be worth contacting social services - wonder if there are any grants available?

They have straight standard late 1960s stairs so the bog standard one was ideal.

We actually went for eBay because we needed it fast - dad had several awful bouts of gout on top of mum having a recent knee replacement.

Cost about 1k and was installed with in 2 weeks but that was 3 ish yrs ago

If she's wheelchair-bound would she actually be able to get on/off the stairlift or would your dad be lifting her for those transfers as well? Has your mum had an assessment from an OT?
