just travelled over 200 mies today to a university to find out that although my son got 4 A* and 5 A's they would not consider his application for medicine despite the likelihood of 3 predicted grade A.
It wasnt in the prospectus or the ucas info that if you have resat one of the sciences to better your grade. (which he did...he resat biology to go from B to an A)you wont even be considered. Pretty annoyed as i could have visited another uni today and also I have wasted £60 in petrol.

Bigstripey - yes of course the route to psychiatry is through med school- like I said ds1 is a 5th yr medic ATM with the aim of becoming a psych after f1 and 2 yrs.

I am not saying that you shouldn't have ambitions in one particular field of med - just that the posters ds will have to have 5 yrs at med school then a further 2 f1/2 yrs before he will even get into training for a psych. I think it would be in his best interests to try to gain as much work experience as possible ie in a care home.

I will make it clear that he needs a mega amount of work experience in this gap year whether in mental health or general care environment. This should help him make up his mind while he still has a deferred place for amother degree on hold to fall back on.
