She'll be 4 this december so she will start school september 2011 and have her 5th Birthday that december in reception class.

It may depend on your specific Local Authority but with effect from next year I think all maintained schools in England have to operate a single intake in the September following a child's 4th birthday. So in your case your child will be 4 in December 2010 so should start school in September 2011. Assuming your school is a normal maintained school (ie not a private one or a church school etc who can have their own admissions policies) your child will be able to start either part-time or full-time and you should have the option to defer until statutory school age if you don't wish your child to start in SEptember 2011. Statutory school age is the term after your child is 5, so in your case your child would have to start in January 2012 if you didn't want her to start in the September. You should contact your Local Authority soon (you can usually do it on-line) to register your child as a 2011/12 starter and they will send you the application pack this November and you will need to make your application by January 2011. Hope that helps!

It depends where you live. Here she would start in January 2011, and you would have needed to have applied by the end of April 2010 to be guaranteed a place.

Bramshott · 08/06/2010 10:17

Sept 2011, like DD2 who was born in March 2007. Here, we need to apply by October this year.

Where do you live? The system is different between England/Wales/Northern Ireland and Scotland.

In England/Wales (and I think Northern Ireland) she'd have to be in full-time education (at school or otherwise) from January 2012 (the term after her fifth birthday) but would normally start in September 2011 at four and three-quarters. That means you'd need to apply for places this autumn/winter and find out what place you've been offered in the spring of 2011.

so the majority opinion seems to be Sept 2011.
okay...thanks all

In (my part of) Wales she would normally start in January 2011.

My DD was born in February 2006 and I had to apply for her place by the end of April 2009 in order for her to start in April 2010.

MargaretAtwood3660 · 08/06/2010 10:43

You will have the option to accept the place and defer till the January term.

The rules just changed on this. They have to go the term after their 5th birthday but if it's in the summer, they'll start in the summer term (unless you apply for the following year)

mophead5 · 08/06/2010 11:02

blimey helyg...if she starts in Jan 2011 she'll only be just 4. thats really early.

It's normal here. DD started 6 weeks after turning 4.

prh47bridge · 08/06/2010 11:09

The majority is correct assuming you are in England. Under the new rules she can start in September 2011 but you have the option of deferring until January 2012. Even if you want to defer you must still apply this autumn for a place next September. The place starts in September even if the child doesn't, if you see what I mean.
