Any good tips for preparing dd for yr2 ?

After last years debacle, (dd was not remotely prepared for the leap from reception - yr1) I am hoping to get her a little better prepared for yr2 (or maybe I mean myself!)

Anyone got any good advice/websites about what is expected in year 2?

No advice Unicorn - but I'd be interested too as in the same position. So, bump!

I think the change from reception to Year 1 is a big one, but going from year 1 to year 2 isn't so bad. The workload is the same as Year 1, maybe a bit harder but that is gradual.

DD is starting Year 2 in september.

Ahh. A question for me! As a Year One Teacher on mat leave, I would advise that you make a good start on making sure your child can sight read and spell yr2 keywords (can be found in literacy strategy...will seek out the web ad for you later this eve). To motivate, you could draw a big picture of a fish, with a keyword written in each scale. Children can colour the scales as they learn them. This would work with other pics too,but i'm rubbish at drawing!! Its better to learn, say 10 a week, than add to them.

Poor old Year Two's can find the SATs hard, so lots of reading passages and asking questions about it. Also see if you can write and follow instructions together - something simple like how to make a jug of squash (we're not talking about complicated cake recipes here-although chocolate rice crispie cakes might be fun).

Maths wise, practise number bonds to 100 (adding two numbers to make 100), subtraction and counting sets to start on multiplication e.g. 3,6,9 etc. Children find it easier to physically count, so you could try using smarties or raisins or pasta etc. The maths objectives are in the Numeracy Strategy. Again, i will hunt the web ad for you.

Hope this helps

I truly can't understand why the govt makes it so hard to track down what we want to know, unicorn! (My ds is going into yr 2, too)

Here is at least a start on what we need to know: yr2 high frequency words - likklemum, is this site where we should be looking? It's just that the home page says something like "the literary and numeracy sections will no longer be updated" so perhaps we should trail off elsewhere ...?

And numeracy seems to be here ...?

exactly what I thought too binkie!

thanks for links.. I eventually found the keywords one last night...(needle in haystack springs to mind!) but cheers for the numeracy.

Thank you look at the site now know where to start at the end of the holidays to help her get a good start

Thanks Binkie - DS2 goes into Y2 in September and has just moved into the State system from a very small alternative school where they didn't follow the national curriculum so I've been wondering how best to support him. The keywords information really helps.
