Art lesson inspiration needed, please!

I'm covering a y4 class next week and have been asked to do an art lesson based on 'the coast'. They've already done some fab paintings of calm and rough seas and clay work. I'd be very grateful if any of you had some arty ideas to inspire me on this theme. Many thanks.

A collage? Glue and bits of tissue paper always go down really well.

My DD is in yr 4 and did a fab collage when they all picked a word and did a collage of what the word looked like - so she did irridescent (sp) (I think) and it was all shiny and sparkly.

You could suggest some words on a beach theme - sandy, sparkling, sunset, surfing - and then they cut out the word and do a collage including it and representing it.

I'm not explaining it well. Also there is a word for it - will try googling.

Mermaids
Silver foil for tails, drawn/painted bodies & faces, then wool/thread/string hair. Add shell accessories.

CD fish
Old CD is a round fish body. Add foil or shiny card fins and tail: stuck on with PVA. Draw on scales & features with marker pen. Thread through centre hole then hang from ceiling.

seagulls
Draw round hands on white paper & cut out to make wings. Draw head & body on another sheet, Stick wings onto body & add features with pen. Curl fingers/feathers to add 3d effect. Whole flock could fly across the wall!

Thanks, guys. Some great ideas which I'm about to try out for myself before I decide on the most appropriate. Very creative!

Clary, I love your idea of the illustrated words. If you're able to google it, I'd be very grateful: I've tried but not quite sure what to look for. Thanks.

really sorry doglover, I only saw yr post last night and I need to ask DD what it was called.

Then I forgot this morning. Will ask her tonight (she is sure to remember). Hope it's in time to be some use .

Something made with flotsam and jetsam? Drfitwood? Found things? Errm, not that I imagine it would be easy to get hold of driftwood at sort notice. But you get my drift

Hah DD has failed me (to be fair it was last year). She says it was a word poem, and you wrote a word down, cut it out and decorated it with (for example) sparkly things - paper, fabric, glitter - or wet-look things - blue, shiny etc - then mounted it on a card (a small rectangle IIRC, like a big label, say 20-30cm x 10 cm) which was also decorated.

HTH (prob not!)

Thanks everyone. All ideas noted and some explored.
