Does anyone know when my dd will start school?

Hi all,

My dd was born last year on September 3rd. My head hurts thinking about it, but will she start school when she is 4 or 5?

I 'think' it depends what county you're in - which LEA do you fall under?

In our area, the cut-off point is 31 August, so your daughter would start in the September that she is 5 - and will be one of the eldest in her year

My ds was born 2nd of Sept (98) and if we were schooling he would be due to start this year aged 5.

it does depend on your LEA but legally you are supposed to send your child to school the term after they turn 5yrs1month.

The school years are all the same all over the country 1st Sept through to 31 August but when they actually start school depends on your LEA (local education authority) and sometimes varies from school to school. If your local schools only have one intake a year i.e. in September then she will be 5 (or almost) when she starts - my ds was born on 2 September and he started on his 5th birthday. Other LEAs have 'rising 5s' so they start the term they are 5, some have other ideas, but that usually means that the younger ones start later rather than your dd starting earlier.

If you are Scottish, the cut off for birthdays is end of Feb therefore your dd would start in August, a couple of weeks before her 5th birthday.

No, I'd guess that she'll start nursery class (if there is one) in September 2006 and Reception in September 2007. If you are in rural Wales relatives have found that the schools are quite keen to take the kids earlier to keep numbers up, it's just like playschool but ina school.

FWIW my goddaughter was born 2 weeks late and ended up as the oldest in her class rather than the youngest. She settled at school very easily.
