simple question, just been browsing for maths resources and stumbled on a scheme called Numicon
just wondering if anyone (most likely teachers) had any experience/comments...
TIA

I was shown this resource on a training course - the Course leaders - The fantastic BEAM

couldnt stop talking about it and they highly reccomended it. It's a bit like 3D unifix/multilink/Dienes equipment.

I had a bit of a play but needed more time to get to grips with it.

So highly reccomended but no experience of working with it - sorry.

It's brilliant - very visual and practical too. We use it for our SEN children, some of whom have come on in leaps and bounds.

Anyone have any negative experiences?

We have it at our school but no one seems to have been trained in it so we aren't getting the most out of it

I have it at my school. It's BRILLIANT! Helps children develop "concept images" which is what people are who naturally good at maths have in their heads instinctively. I think it was designed for SEN children originally but it is very useful across the ability range. My highfliers (in reception) self-initiated investigating how many lots of 10 there are in 100 the other day. They solved it too - and when they ran out of 10s they just said - ah that's ok, we can use a 9 and a 1 to make a 10. Fabulous!

Thanks for the reviews. I told DH about it, it's around £30 for the home kit. Seems like a worthwhile investment as we are considering HEing our DCs.

I see your point about concept images. I have numbers up to 9 but laid out as a 3x3, rather than the numicon 2x5... that may be more due to Big Brain Academy on the DS though
