School registration

Was just wondering if anyone can help me please?

I was talking to my mother (I am currently pregnant and due anyday) who says that as soon as this child is born I should register it at the local school as other mothers in the village have had problems getting their (older pre school)children in.

It is a small village school and only takes up to about 70 students and is extremely popular. As I don't forsee us ever leaving the village I would really like our child to attend the school where most of its friends will attend and I can walk he/she to.

I guess my question is - when can I register a child for school? I don't really want to look like an idiot or miss out on he/she getting in and this is all new to me.

If it is a state school then you need to submit your application some time in the year before they start school (is different for different areas).

Your child (assuming you are in England) will start school in the year 2014/2015 and you will need to apply around Autumn 2013.

but do register baby for pre-school as that is a totally different scenario, ran by a voluntary committee most probably and with strict ofsted regulations re numbers allowed to attend(that's what your mum might be going on about) as you can attend any pre school it doesn't have to be your local one.
