Advice on schools and moving house

Oh wise mumnetters just looking for some advice really.
We are hoping to be in a position financially to finally be able to afford our long anticipated move to a area not far from where we are. My question is, if we were to move as soon as we hoped my DD would be in Yr2 and how do I go about getting her into a local school? Do I have to have moved into the area? When would I apply? Also, is it the same procedure if things do not go to plan for a secondary school?
How disruptive is changing schools going to be for her? Is there an ideal year to make the move?
TIA

We moved from one area of the country to another, dd started her new school in year 2.

I contacted the LEA and they were useless. In the end I contacted all the schools direct. One had a place and we could find a house there so we conditionallly took a place.
