DS is doing the Romans and seems very interested so I thought we could go somewhere over half term to see some more. Can anyone suggest anywhere good in London to go please? TIA.

Don't know about London - maybe the British Museum? If you can make the trip there's some great stuff in St Albans - the remains of the Roman theatre, walls, and also a whole museum.

I think you mean

the Verulamium museum

highly recommended

If you can get down to Sussex, try

Bignor Roman Villa

Both my dds and me (as helper) went there with the school. Again, very interesting.

iirc in the Museum of London in the Barbican Centre there are the remains of the roman building that was discovered when they built the barbican, they left it in place and built the museum around it I think - might be worth looking at.

Museum of London on London Wall (a Roman wall!!!)

here

Try Museum of London

TRL · 19/01/2010 09:59

The Museum of London (free entry!) has some great models of Roman buildings and forts, and a great description, complete with artifacts, of how London grew in Roman times - my DSs have both loved it since they could toddle! There are also a few remaining stretches of the Roman wall which encircled Londinium in the neighbourhood to look at as well.

The British Museum has some Roman galleries containing sculpture/artifacts - not so child-friendly somehow as the Museum of London ... but better coffee!!

TRL · 19/01/2010 10:00

Ha, the Museum of London worshippers have all cross-posted ....

daftpunk · 19/01/2010 10:02

We have haven't we....The KOL fan got there first..

But it is a fab place....and deffo worth a visit..

SexOnFire · 19/01/2010 10:09

I can't believe a post of mine has agreed with one of daftpunk's

I live a mile from the museum, so it was on the tip of my tongue.

In hampshire so maybe too far out, but how about Butser?

MaggieW · 19/01/2010 10:59

Thanks all - that's great. We'll definitely go the Museum of London as, from the links you've given, it's also got Great Fire of London exhibits, which DD is doing just now, so a good choice! We'll also try to get to one of the out of London places as well - as I'm interested in learning too! Thanks again.

If you want to try another Roman Villa in West Sussex, there is also Fishbourne Roman Villa just outside Chichester & I think virtually next door to Fishbourne Railway Station on the South Coast Line.

mussyhillmum · 19/01/2010 13:38

Hi,

You may want to check the MofL's website for half-term activities. My DC did a great Roman themed comic strip workshop last autumn. Also, I think the Great Fire exhibit may be closed for renovation. Not sure when it is opening again.

Have fun!

The British Museum has several large Roman galleries.
