We are possibly moving to Macclesfield in Cheshire with DHs work and wonder if anyone has advice re secondary and primary schools? Ones to avoid? we are not particularly religious so no faith schools please, and only state. Thanks in anticipation.

There are quite a few good schools in Macc.

There are 5 secondary schools discounting (Kings (private) and All Hallows (Catholic) the ones that seem to be the best regarded are Falibroome & Tytherington (in that order). Macclesfield High has a fantastic state of the art brand new building with great facilities but is not so well regarded.

Prestbury Primary is a very good school but is C of E. In fact there quite a few C of E schools in the area. Don't immediately discount them there are so many you may find you have no choice in the end.

Non faith schools off the top of my head with good reputations include Marlborough ((feeds Tytherington)Upton Priory, Rainow, any of the Bollington schools (though they are probably going to be closing/merging one soon).

High schools - Fallibroome & Tytherington are thought to be the best. Primary schools - there are a lot. Marlborough is one of the best, Puss Bank is also good (lovely atmosphere) - both of these feed Tytherington (which incidentally is one of the better parts of Macc to live in).

I grew up in Macclesfield (Tytherington) and went to Marlborough primary school and the girls' High School (which closed in the 80's and the building is now part of Kings I think). In my first year at primary school there were over 50 children in the one class, half of us had chairs and the other half sat on the floor. I think things have changed a bit now - that was in 1970!

Sorry, no help for you, but thanks for bringing back some happy memories for me!

Strawbezza - your old high school is the primary school part of Kings and also the girls high school (upto 6th form - then they go to the main campus and are allowed to mix with boys!)

Just thought I'd update you!

Thanks for the info FernieB, wow, girls and boys mixing! Wasn't like that in my day...

Sorry for hijack juliemacc. FWIW, my family lived in Macc for almost 40 years and thought it was a great little town.
