Maths Tutors

My dd is in year 5 and needs a maths tutor for an extra boost. Has anyone used Kumon before and did it make a difference. I live in the Croydon area and would be pleased for suggestions on a tutor.

No personal experience but my neighbour has used them for her (slight Aspergers syndrome) son, and was pleased with them.

Do you have an Explore Learning near you?

I hear a lot of possitive things about Kumon on Mumsnet, but for us personally, it wasn't brilliant.

We have found having a one to one tutor for an hour a week beneficial, if you can find the right person.

You might also look into Kip McGrath.

Thanks everyone will look into the other otions. Have another dilemma. DD has been offered a place at a different school which on paper (ofsted report) is doing better than the school she is in. Not sure whether to disrupt her and move her now which she is in year five or will the disruption be too much before sats. Any thoughts anyone.

Suggest you look at Wemms Maths Unlimited, based in Ashtead Surrey. If you google search them on Touch Local Kingston, they have 73 positive referrals of which 49 are actual written references.

Kumon has its place, but it is repeative and boring and is forced rote learning.

One to one tuition should be imaginative and fun.

Also, if I wanted an electric plug fixing I would ensure I went to a fully qualified electrican..... I tend to think my child's education is even more important and I want them taught by a fully qualified maths teacher... not an enthusiastic helper/graduate or somebody who has done a short course in how to manager a franchise.
