a question for teachers re salary

Not sure if this is the right place, but here goes!

I'm a qualified teacher who worked in a state school for two complete years after qualifying. I've had a break for a number of years and am about to start back in a school after Christmas.

Should I be going in on salary scale 2 or 3? I thought it would be 3, but the school says 2. Can anyone explain the system to me?

Should be whatever you were on when you left. How long have you been out for? They scales changed about 4 years ago anyway. Look here for link to salary info.

So you did you NQT year then two more years? So 3 in total? Usually teachers progress 1 point for each year in teaching, which should be scale point 3. Only once you pass on to upper pay scale does it go up in two yearly increments to UPS3. Talk to your union and other teachers who have taught a similar length of time to you so you can compare.

Thank you. I did my NQT year, plus one more year.I haven't taught in the state system for eight years, so I must have been under the old pay scale. I'm happy to accept what the school say, I'm just interested in the system and where I fit in.

You should defo be on 3 I think.

You need to phone the union, NUT are helpful on this and get some proper advice. I think it is 3 as well. Also if you post on TES forums, you will get great advice. Good Luck.

You should be on point 3 I think

Hi, in both my jobs, the school offered me a lower level than i thought I should be on. Remember they have a budget and if they can get you cheaper they will. but if you think you should be on point 3 go for it. in the first job I gave in, but not the second and they agreed to what i wanted. sorry to sound cynical, but i've come across lots of teachers who were offered below what they thought they should have been on.
