we're trying to find a 'map of worldwide shipping routes' for GCSE homework and need help! Anyone come across anything like this? She's also been asked to draw a map of the current UK rail system showing the various operators - I mean, how long have they got?!!

Hi Kia - been a big girly swot and found something for you. Galbraith's publish a shipping map. You can buy copies (£34,probably too expensive for homework!), but you can view parts of the map online - eg North America, Europe, South America, Far East etc. It shows all the ports and the routes in between them. Even if you can't print them out it might help you to draw them on your own map. Find it on www.galbraiths.co.uk and go to the section down the side menu that says Galbraith's Shipping Map 4th Edition.

Couldn't find anything comprehensive on the UK rail system, but thought you might be able to find something online with a bit of searching. Your local train station might have a network map you could copy.

Hope that helps! (I'm a bit of an internet surfing research anorak.)

The map of the UK rail system is very tricky Kia as the train operators overlap in a number of areas. I can't remember seeing one definitive map but www.rail-reg.gov.uk lists all the operating companies and provides links to their individual sites which in turn contain maps of their networks. Putting it all together though would be quite tricky.

You guys are wonderful, many thanks! Emmam I'm a research anorak too, we could make our own club! Last night whilst looking up 'transportation systems of the world'(!) I found myself on a before and after dentistry site! I do loads of surfing in my job - researching international legislation etc and sometimes its mind boggling what you can get just by putting the word 'privacy' into a search engine! Not for the faint hearted! Many thanks you have saved me hours. Oh and if anyone needs canals of Britain, I'm your woman!
