yr 2 sats

I thought yr2 sats were meant to go " un noticed" by the children. 2 days this week ds1 has come home and said he has been off on his own ( with a teacher) to do test papers. will i get to hear why? I doubt it!

My 4 school age kids who are all very different in ability and personality and attitude towards school ALL really enjoyed 'assessement week' as it is something different. No stress from the school about it, no stress from home about it - they love it and look forward to it next year.

Has your ds been absent at all in the last few weeks? We had one child who was away when the rest of the class did their maths paper and reading comprehension paper. Therefore, when she came back to school, she had to do the papers on her own with a TA.

they went unnoticed my the parents at our school, I have a pfb, as do some of my mates, and the first we heard abuot the sats was on the school newsletter.

after the event.

Isn't that good, Ididntraiseatheif? That you didn't know it was happening, I mean?

mallett - is your child particularly good at maths or literacy? If so, he may have gone off with a teacher to do the level 3 paper - it is possible (not likely but possible) that he's the only one in his class to do it. it is also possible that the other level 3 people did it at different times.

no!!

my dd came home, said 'oh mummy it was weird today we had to sit seperately, and we had a test and a pencil, and we weren't alllowed to talk to each other.'

i knew nothing about the fact yr 2 even had sats. I wuold have liked to have known they existed for that age group!

yes to them being understated, and not a threat or bother, but i would have liked to have known nonetheless, that dd was doing them.

seeker, you seem to now about these levels and things!

DD's teacher happened to be walking by me the other day and said, 'oh your dd did very well in her level 3 literacy today'

I smiled and said oh great but was like what are you talking about!!!

Don't you have parent meetings at the beginning of the year giving you a rough idea what they'll be doing?

Haven't you heard about SATS in the paper or on the News?

The average year 2 child is expected to reach a level 2b. Level 3 is the highest a year 2 child can get, so she is doing very well. You will get your dd's results in writing, probably as part of her annual report.

I'll find a link that explains it better and post it for you - but it would have been fine to say to the teacher "What does that mean?"

no, absolutely nothing was mentioned!!

I consider myself pretty informed, and have heard about sats, but genuinely thought they were for older kids. I don't have any friends with older ones, so haven't picked up any info via the school gate network!

Our school is a fab school, but info seems a bit hit and miss the past 6 months or so, other mums have commented on it too. One of my closest friends, with a yr 2 but pfb , listens to far more radio etc than me, but she too was taken aback!

this same school, never informed me for at least a yr that dd was on the g+t list either.

I totally don't want pressure on my dd, but information to the parent would be great!!

Her teacher is a bit flakey, lovely but flakey. The comment on the level 3, was doled out to me at hometime when she was walking past.

must investigate, as were I even a smidgen more aware I would be inthere with my questions like a shot.

glad this topic came up.

I think it is great that the school doesn't see the need to tell parents that SATs are coming up. That is how it is meant to be.

I have been at schools where the teacher has put pressure on from the beginning of the year to go out and buy practice workbooks etc. It is the worst (most worried) schools that pile on the pressure and practice.

By the way, assesements are every May

thanks everyone for your answers, we get the results at the end of this month with reports. his head did comment to me in passing that he had done very well in his sats so maybe he did go and do a level 3, time will tell!!

You DON'T get 'results' of Y2 SATs. You get teacher assessments.

Y2 SATs are only used to advise teacher assessment.

Y2 SAT results are not published anywhere apart from Raiseonline as a set of statistics about the cohort (not individual children). They will be used by governors to check targets against end of year teacher assessments, and will be questioned if their are any anomalies.
