I would like a private tutor for dc one evening a week. Could anyone recommend a reputable website. I had a look on uktutors.com, but they asked for a fee of £9.99,is this the norm? Any advice appreciated

Try word of mouth rather than websites becuase most will charge a registration fee. Maybe a teacher you know who wouldn't mind the extra cash or an ex-teacher-turned-SAHM. People have been known to find tutors via MN before - whereabouts in the country are you?

Agree with frannikin - we found our tutor by a postcard in the local shop - recently retired teacher, doing some tutoring locally. It's a perfect situation and seems a lot more personal IYKWIM. It is also a whole lot cheaper than eg Fleet Tutors. I know at some schools some of the teachers do "moonlight" as tutors so it is worth asking around the Mummy network!
