If our child starts reception class this september do we have to re apply for a school place when our child gets to primary school age?

Yes, if your child is at an infant school which finishes after Y2.
But if your child is at a primary school, which runs from Reception to Y6 then no, that is one school so once you are in you are in.

Also, some infant schools are 'feeder schools' for nearby junior schools, in which case ask at the infant school office what the procedure is.

If the schools are separate, not just one big primary with all ages, then yes you do.

My DS's go to an infant and a junior on the same site and DS1 had to apply to go to the junior. For most people it is a formality but you could chose to send your DC to a completely different school else where. You get the choice.
