posieflump · 02/02/2009 18:58

guys, I think your meant to scroll down and read all the entertaiing messages after the article

twinsetandpearls · 02/02/2009 19:00

Because we were all sat shivering in a portacabin on a normal teaching day, our school was one of the few open despite the fact that several staff had accidents driving to work that morning and the kids coming off the school buses described the trip in as something like a rollercoaster.
We also think that the student who moans about the fact that his school is open despite being the hardest to reach is also one of ours, although I doubt that anyone will own up to being his English teacher.

It is always a joy to see someone reverting to the old teachers work from 9-3 and have 4 months a year off.

Yes sorry you need to read the comments not the article.

Oh I see now, scroll down for all the argy bargy in the comments about the news article.

Ivykaty44 · 02/02/2009 19:06

mrsmaidamess - sorry to interupt, how did your hair go?

pointydog · 02/02/2009 19:16

That news report video was shocking. I was watching it and peering to see any snow. People struggling to deliver newspapers when... there is no snow on the roads or pavements. 'What is this snow lying on?' CAmera pans out and... it's a ruddy great alsatian! Well I never. 'This is what [some Dorset tourist attraction] looked like today' - like a pretty building surrounded by a mottled sprinkling of snow.

You southerners are either snow softies or else terribly bad news reporters.

twinsetandpearls · 02/02/2009 19:18

I am not a southerner pointy, I am in exile.

The main roads were not snowy only the minor roads, as I said getting into our school today was like driving across an ice rink.

pointydog · 02/02/2009 19:22

I think that is a bad example of an 'extreme weather' news report, twin. I do not think you are the least bit soft

twinsetandpearls · 02/02/2009 19:25

I am actually very soft especially when I had to walk into walk in my heeled boots this morning.

Ivy, My hair?

Sorry, can't remember that!

Reallytired · 03/02/2009 17:05

What is funny is that many people do not realise that most teachers have little or no say whether their school shuts. Even headteachers follow LEA guidence and with some councils like Birmingham or Surrey the decision was made totally by the LEA.

Thomcat · 03/02/2009 17:20

I get why they closed school on the first day, but no idea why there was no school today.
The roads are fine, everything should be back to normal. I don't get why the schools round here were closed again today I really don't. We had a max of 8 inches snow on Sunday night / Monday morning and a bit of a snow fell during the day but not much. Hasn't snowed since and roads are wet, pavements slushy.

Ivykaty44 · 03/02/2009 18:28

MM - It might be me, perhaps I have the wrong person (it was mens hair dye and being cheap) scuttles away

ABetaDad · 03/02/2009 22:44

The private school my kids go to announced at lunch time yesterday that it would be closed today.

There was no snow at all on the road or pavements by this morning and most other schools were open. It could easily have opened with simple message on the website for parents.

To say I was seething would be an understatement. I live about 200 metres form the school and I know lots of the teachers live within walking distance.

I know the owner of a cafe near the school and he said a lot of the techers were in there yesterday saying they hoped the school would let them have the two days off. Its a private school and I am shocked at their lack of commitment.

unavailable · 03/02/2009 22:57

Just to be clear - is it a private school ABetaDad?

wheresthehamster · 03/02/2009 23:00

Apologies - I did mention it was private school twice because I am so damn annoyed because the state schools showed a lot more professionalism and commitment. I am wondering what I am paying for.

Reallytired · 04/02/2009 18:31

I think its shocking, ABetaDad when the special school I work for was open today and we have plenty of snow left.

We have one or two children who travel 50 miles to school each way on a daily basis and some of our children are very unsteady on their feet. To make matters worst the school is completely in the middle of the sticks. If children with special needs can get to school then I am sure that ABetaDad's children's school teachers could make it.

We have been told that the school is opening tomorrow unless there is very heavy snow fall. The teachers where I work are very commited, but the school follows guidence from the LEA.

Rocky12 · 05/02/2009 13:18

I have two children at private schools. First school was shut on Monday, I dont think it would have dared to shut on Tues. However our older son's school sent out an email to all the parents (its a day and boarding school) saying they were open, the heating was on and they had plenty of food.

I think the reasons that a number of the schools were shut is the H&S issue. The small miniority of people who think they can sue at the drop of a hat means that schools, local authorities etc etc look at that when they make decisions.

FAQtothefuture · 05/02/2009 13:20

surely the worst commitment has to be at one of our local primary schools who closed on Tuesday citing that all the gates to the site were frozen shut and they were unable to gain access
