Hi. My DH is in the Navy and thinking about retaking his english/ maths with a view to further promotion. He would need O-grade (or today's equivalent) at least. A home learning course might be best. Has anyone got any info on where to start looking? Thanks!

ask your local community education department. They should be helpful

Our local FE college offers Highers through "flexible learning" - you sign up with the college and get a tutor, but can then work at your own pace through the year. I don't know what would happen about the exam though, assuming that he may not be available to sit it at the proper date.

Some OU courses offer GCSE equivalence. eg. MU120 is equivalent to GCSE maths and is recognised for entry to teacher training. This course may also be recognised by other professions, and as an added bonus there is no exam.

these are all good suggestions- will look into them! DH is also going to ask the careers people at the RN for their input, but he is shore-based for the next 18mths or so, so might be nice to do it locally. He is quite apprehensive, having failed at school, but I think he will be pleasantly surprised- he isn't as daft as he thinks!

Thanks all x
