Screening results with reading.

I would be interested if anyone could answer this

My ds, 8 years old has just received his 'screening results' for reading, no biggie, apparently it's an on-going process to help the teachers help the children.

But I don't understand the results. Ds has a reading age of 9.7. and yet he's a year younger. Sounds great to me! And yet when I look at the 'standardised score' his score creeps in just to a 'low average' in terms of comparison to other children.

How can that be so when a child scores below average(just!!!) and yet reads better than his age group!

Sounds like the comparison to the rest of the class?

What was the screening test used?
